Mckayla Langmeier (USA) road to victory aboard Pepita VD Rollebeek in the final competition of the ‘North American’ at Spruce Meadows. A fan favourite, the Sun Life Derby features over one kilometre of track and 18 obstacles (24 efforts) that include a steep bank, double liver pools, dry ditch and of course - the notorious Devil’s Dyke.
The final Grand Prix of the Spruce Meadows Summer Tournaments, the $1,000,000 ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup, promised crowds an exciting afternoon of top show jumping.
The ATCO Cup closed out competitions on the International Ring for Friday of the ‘North American’. The Irish have been fighting amongst themselves at the top of the leaderboard, and today it was Darragh Kenny aboard Lightning, who produced the fastest clear round in the jump-off with a time of 36.95s.
Today’s Jayman BUILT Cup had 40 competitors step through the Clock Tower to challenge FEI Course Designer Santiago Varela (ESP) 560m track. As the lone qualifier for the weekend’s $1,000,000 ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup, athletes hoping to compete for the grand purse need to complete today’s course with at least one horse.

In this competition, horse/rider combinations negotiate the course trying to go clear within the time allowed. For each jump knocked down, four faults are added to the score. If the horse refuses a jump, four faults are also added. If the horse refuses a second time, the combination is eliminated. Should the horse or rider fall or go off course, they are also eliminated. The Course Designer sets the time allowed in which the riders must complete the course. They are penalised one fault for every second over the time allowed. After the first round is complete, ALL ties for first place (usually clear rounds) return for a jump-off. The jump-off course is shorter and sometimes higher than the first round. Jumping and time faults are the same. The combination that has the fewest faults in the fastest time is the winner.
